The Asantewaa School Chess Revolution

When teacher Mr. Osei introduced the PiChess Foundation's school program at Asantewaa Basic School, he expected mild interest. What he got was a revolution. "Every Friday is now chess day," he says, beaming. "The students count down the days. Attendance on Fridays went up by 30%." The program, whi...

Adjoa's Scholarship Dream Became Reality

Adjoa's Scholarship Dream Became Reality

Growing up in Tamale in the Northern Region, 16-year-old Adjoa never imagined she'd play chess competitively. Girls in her community rarely played sports, let alone a game many considered "for boys." But when the PiChess Foundation opened a hub at her local community centre, Adjoa was curious. Within weeks, she was hooked. "The boys underestimated me," she laughs. "That made me want to win even more." Adjoa's determination caught the eye of our coaches. She received a full scholarship to the PiChess Academy and became the first girl from her community to compete at a national chess tournament. "The scholarship changed my entire future. I never imagined this was possible," she says. "Now younger girls in my community come to watch me play. They see that chess is for everyone." Adjoa now mentors three younger girls through our mentorship program, passing forward the opportunity she was given.

Coach Emmanuel: From Student to Mentor

Emmanuel was one of the first ten students in the PiChess Foundation's pilot program in 2021. Back then, he was a quiet 16-year-old with no particular direction in life. Five years later, he's one of our most beloved coaches, teaching chess to over 60 children across three community hubs. "Chess saved me," Emmanuel says simply. "It taught me patience when I had none. It taught me that every problem has a solution if you think hard enough. And now I get to pass that on." Emmanuel completed his chess coaching certification through our training program and now earns a living doing what he loves. He's proof that our foundation doesn't just help children — it creates the next generation of leaders. "When I see a child's eyes light up after they win their first game, I remember exactly how that felt. That's why I do this."

A Mother's Joy: How Chess Changed Ama's Family

When Ama heard about the PiChess Foundation's school program at her children's primary school in Kumasi, she was skeptical. "Chess? My children need maths and reading," she thought. But after just one term, she noticed something remarkable. Her daughter Akua, who had always struggled with concentration, was sitting still for hours practising chess puzzles. Her grades improved across every subject. "The teachers told me Akua's focus had completely transformed," Ama says with tears in her eyes. "She went from near the bottom of her class to the top five. And her brother followed." Now both children attend the after-school chess club every day. Akua has won two inter-school tournaments, and her brother recently earned a PiChess scholarship. "Chess didn't just help my children with school — it gave them confidence, discipline, and something to be proud of. I tell every parent I know about this program."

From the Streets of Nima to the National Championship

Kofi was 11 when he first touched a chess piece at one of our community hubs in Nima, Accra. Growing up in a neighbourhood where many young boys end up on the streets, Kofi had few opportunities. But from the moment he learned how the knight moves, something changed. "Chess made me think differently," Kofi says. "Before, I didn't plan ahead. Now I think three, four, five moves ahead — in chess and in life." Within a year, Kofi was beating players twice his age. Our coaches saw his talent and enrolled him in the PiChess Academy on a full scholarship. Two years later, he represented Ghana at the African Youth Chess Championship. Today, Kofi is 14, ranked among the top junior players in Ghana, and dreams of becoming an International Master. His mother, a market trader, says the foundation gave her son a future she never imagined.
